An angry Dion Waiters vents about playing time after lopsided Heat loss

The Story: Miami Heat player Dion Waiters ( who has been sidelined since last January with an ankle injury) is back and ready to play, except things are not working out like he'd like.  He has not been getting much playing time the last couple games and is starting to lose his patience with the team.  Waiters is used to being a starter in the game as he started 73 of 76 games the past two seasons.

The Problem:  The issue here is that Dion Waiters was an impactful player for the Heat and now he is back after the injury but is not receiving the amount of playing time that he would like.  Waiters had some expletive comments about the game after they lost to Milwaukee Bucks by a large deficit.  Having players angry like this is not healthy for the team and definitely does not promote a winning mentality.

Whose Problem?:  This is Erik Spoelstra's problem because he is the head coach of the Miami Heat.  It is his responsibility to determine the number of minutes each player will get to play.  Now that Dion Waiters is unhappy with his playing time it is up to the coach to be able to find a way to balance the team.

Workplace hazards that include amputation will cost Doral printing company $42,600

The Story: The compnay Nupress of Miami is recieving $42,663 in Department of Labor fines as 12 serious voilations were exposed during the inspections.  Some of the violations had to do with the fact that the workers were not being protected as they were working near dangerous equipment.  For example, one of the amputation hazards brought up was that the only safety of the companies large cutting tool was by the use of cardboard and velcro.

The Problem: The issue here is that the safety regulations in companies are being overlooked by the companies themselves.  These inspections exposed multiple regulations that were broken by the company and could have caused serious injuries if it was not taken care of sooner.

Whose Problem?: This is a problem for Nupress of Miami because they are the ones being charged with these alarming violations.  It is important for them to learn from this and take the proper precautions when working with/near dangerous equipment.

More than 68,000 pounds of chicken recalled after wood was found by some customers

The Story:  Three customers from Perdue said that they found pieces of wood inside their chicken nuggets.  These nuggets were supposed to be organic and gluten free nuggets, but customers received an unpleasant suprise after biting into them.

The Problem: The issue here is that a very large amount of chicken had to be recalled.  The fact of the matter is that people finding wood in their chicken nuggets is extremely alarming and should be taken very seriously.  It was said that the company traced back the nuggets and found a best-by date of 10/25/19.

Whose Problem?:  This is a problem for the Simply Smart Organics brand.  They made the error of using those chicken nuggets that included wood inside them.  This is be a setback for the company as they will try to attempt to regain the trust of their consumers.

This company kept it simple in trying to cheat workers out of almost $50,000 in pay

The Story: The Stone World Imports and Manufacturing company simply did not pay their employees even if they completed an overtime shift.  They said that they only pay for straight time rates/hours and did not entertain the option of paying people who worked extra.  They now have to pay thousands of dollars in back wages.

The Problem: The issue here is that the company tried to cheat its own employees.  Their plan definitely backfired as they are now paying 21 employees in back wages.  This will definitely hinder the owners economic standings as it should because refusing to pay workers is a large red flag.

Whose Problem?: This is a problem for Stone World Imports and Manufacturing because it is now getting publicity as being the company that did not pay its employees.  In particular it is a direct problem for the president, Nivaldo Ribiero, who is responsible for fixing this issue.

Brickell hotel ordered to pay former dishwasher $21.5 million - for retaliation over her religion

The Story:  A Brickell hotel had to pay up $21.5 million to an ex-employee who got fired because she was unable to work on Sundays.  The reason for this was because of her religion, and although the kitchen manager knew this he still scheduled her on Sunday.  For a couple weeks she had other workers take her Sunday shift, but soon the kitchen manager (George Colon) demanded her to work on Sunday.  When she couldn't work the hotel fired her.

The Problem: The issue here is that the hotel knew her religion and that she couldn't work Sundays, yet still scheduled and fired her.  It was wrong for the kitchen manager to schedule someone when he knew she couldn't make it for religious reasons.

Whose Problem?: This is a problem for the Brickell hotel and George Colon because they are both responsible.  It was Colon who continued to schedule her even though he knew about the relgious circumstances.  The fact that the employee was later fired makes the situation even worse and the hotel should be working hard to regain trust from their workers.

  1. Hi Ian! The articles you found are so interesting. I cannot believe that wood was found in chicken nuggets. I do not know what I would do if I went to bite into chicken and wood was inside. I can see how this would definitely be a problem for both the company and the consumers. The company will have this incident held over their heads for a long time to come.

  2. Ian,

I am a huge Heat fan and I think Spo has a difficult job since he has a team of good players but not great and finding playing time for all of the players is obviously difficult. I also did see the dishwasher story that made national headlines as well which I agree the fact that the employee was fired made everything worse.
